DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOURISM MARKET BEFORE COVID
Since 2019, the labor market has undergone large-scale transformations. The pandemic has changed the format of work – the growth of online employment has become an obvious trend, but at the same time, sectors that cannot switch to remote mode have suffered, in particular tourism and the hotel business. Pandemic: the beginning of the outflow of personnel. During the quarantine restrictions, the hotel business lost a significant part of its staff – many specialists were forced to look for new opportunities. Some moved to other industries, some went abroad, and still others adapted to the online format of work.
Full-scale invasion: the employer’s market
Since 2022, the situation has changed dramatically: the labor market has become an “employer’s market” – the demand for work has exceeded the supply. This has led to a decrease in wages, as well as a new wave of outflow of specialists abroad in search of better conditions. Today: the shortage of personnel is becoming a systemic problem
The hotel and restaurant sector is already facing a personnel crisis. Many professionals do not return to Ukraine, and those who remain choose more stable or financially attractive cities.
Tomorrow: risks of mass migration to developed cities
If this trend does not change, in the near future, an increase in the migration of qualified personnel to their hometowns or to regions that are rapidly developing and offer competitive conditions is expected. For the hotel business, this means serious challenges in team formation and employee retention.
What to do?
The hotel and restaurant business needs to review its approaches to personnel management now, form new motivational programs and invest in training in order to retain quality personnel. After all, without strong teams, it is difficult to create profitable and successful real estate.
